Under: The Power of a Positive Outlook

“Hey, Mom, I was just in an accident on the freeway…”

I’m sure you know what I must have felt when I heard those words from the mouth of my 17-year-old son a few hours ago.

First I had to know if he was okay – and, thankfully, he was.

Then I asked about the car.

“I’m so sorry, Mom. I didn’t even see the other car. But I think your car will still drive. It’s not too bad.”

Our freeway is under construction, and at a place where lanes shift and merge, a car behind him didn’t slow enough, clipped his back end, and sent him spinning. He ended up headed toward the oncoming traffic – shaken, but okay.

At times like this, the things that are truly important come into striking clarity. No one was injured in the crash, and for a freeway wreck during rush hour, that is a miracle in my eyes.

Life gets so busy that sometimes I forget to notice – and give thanks for – blessings from Heaven. I am sure that our loving Father in Heaven has sent me many ‘gifts’ that I never noticed, and so never showed appreciation for.

Yet we are told, “In nothing doth man offend God, . . .save those who confess not His hand in all things.”*

The Latin word, offendere, from which our word ‘offend’ comes, means to strike against. That is a pretty harsh action against Someone that I claim to love and honor. Yet I fear that I have offended God many times by being too busy and preoccupied to take note of all He does for me.

I am determined that at least this time, it will not be so. I am going to bed with a heart full of gratitude – and after offering many prayers of thanksgiving for my son’s safety, and for God’s tender mercies yet again shown to my family. It is not inconceivable that we could have been planning another funeral tonight.

There are great promises attached to being grateful. One follows:

“And he who receiveth all things with thankfulness shall be made glorious, and the things of the earth shall be added to him, even an hundred fold, yea, more.”**

We might take our cue from David, in Psalms 34:1, where he says, “I will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.”‘

Blessings from Heaven are not always so dramatic. They come in all sizes and shapes. But I believe they are there nonetheless. All we have to do is watch for them – and then give thanks!

With gratitude,

Roslyn
